Source Based Argument Writing

The CBWP offers cutting edge Professional Development for grades 7-12 in Source Based Argument Writing, based on the Mini-Units developed by the National Writing Project CRWP* leadership team. This approach to teaching argument writing involves providing teachers with an in depth introduction to the Mini-Units and all materials, training in the use of the Using Sources Tool (UST) for evaluating student writing, planning and additional scheduled Professional Development throughout the term of the contract.

All facilitators have specific training in the use of the materials and the evaluation of student writing. While the CRWP materials are available online, the continuing Professional Development component has proven to be a vital component for improving teachers’ capacity and student outcomes.

Source based argument writing is not limited to ELA
We encourage the composition of a multi-grade, multi-discipline cohort of teachers.

While the CBWP offers Professional Development tailored to your district/campus's specific needs, we typically offer the following:

  • 1 school year of professional development and support for a cohort of teachers.
  • 2-3 days of professional development in the use of the materials, including the UST, prior to the beginning of school
  • 4 full days of professional development for evaluating student writing and mini-unit instruction selection and planning

Ongoing support for participating teachers in their classrooms is available and can be added to the contract at additional cost.

  • We are available to meet with district and campus administrators and teacher leaders to discuss how this program works and how it can be tailored to your needs.
  • The cost of the program is determined by your specific requirements, with a minimum of $7,500.
  • Districts are responsible for providing release time and/or stipends for teachers, substitute teachers, travel and any other out of pocket expenses.
  • Professional development days may be offered at district facilities with wi-fi, projector and screen; or on the TAMUCC campus in Corpus Christi.

As part of the National Writing Project, CRWP Professional Development qualifies for payment by Title I funds.
